I have been blogging for a few years now, but I have been doing it in a way that has been severely inconsistent.
When I first started blogging, I just wanted to write and share my opinions and stories. I was 18 at the time, and moving to Paris wasn’t even on my radar. I started this blog off as “La Vie Est Belle”, life is beautiful. When I moved to Paris, I wanted to change the name. “La Vie Est Belle” in itself seemed non-original. So I switched to Diary of an Expat, inspired by my little black journal I bought my first year in France. I wanted to share my adventures and what it was like being a foreigner, but it feels like since then, my voice and that which I want to share, didn’t go with that name.
First of all, since I started reading up on the word expat, I started seeing that expat is a controversial word. After doing some research, it became something I became uncomfortable to promote. The older I get, the more I realize it’s important to also understand the historical aspects of words that we use and are common today. That was one of the reasons I took a step back from the blog.
Secondly, I started asking myself what was the story I wanted to tell and what I wanted to share. My life in Paris has become so much more than just being a foreigner, and I am so much more than that. I felt like I was stuck in a box about the things I could and could not write.
When I first started using social media, my go-to name was kikalavil. It is a mix of what my little sister used to call me (when she could not pronounce Veronica) and a mix of both of my last names. I’ve always been kikalavil in “the online world”, so I felt like having “Diary of an Expat”, connected to my other internet accounts (like Instagram or Twitter) was off. It felt like I was stuck between two names, and the brand I was presenting was not complete. On top of that, when I had first opened WordPress, I asked for my URL to be kikalavil. In general, it just felt like it was a whole lot of confusion, especially for the readers.
So, welcome to the rebrand of my blog, Kikalavil. I am so excited! I want this blog to be so much more than it was in the past. I want to write about multiple things, and I can’t wait to get started. Balancing a blog and a full-time student life is not going to be easy but I am more determined than ever.
Thank you for staying with me through all these changes, and if you are a new reader, thank you!
Besos, Bisous, xoxo,
